                                                  one that is already unfolding"

Every platform in India are somewhere directly regulated by some body set up by Government of India. Like
    • Press Council of India (PCI) looks after print media.
    • News Broadcasters Association (NBA) looks after TV news channels.
    • The Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) regulates the content of the advertisements.
    • Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) monitors films.

But no particular monitoring authority to regulate the OTT platforms by Government of India.

During month of September, 2020

15 major OTT platforms signed a self regulation code which means they have now their own body named " Internet & Mobile Association of India (IAMAI)as a regulatory authority. This code had framework for Age classification, content Descriptions & parental controls in combination with a grievance redressal system. It still gives the consumers the right to make right viewing decisions for themselves & their families.

During Mid October, 2020

A PIL was registered in SC stating that digital content on these OTT platforms is made available to public at large without any filter or screening. So on that note SC issued a notice to centre regarding the regulating OTT platforms by an autonomous body.

On 9 November, 2020

Government of India released a notification from Cabinet Secretariat on the Gazette of India that from now on Government will regulate the
  • Films & Audio-Visual programme made available by online content providers.
  • News & current affairs content on online platform.

Under the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting

Order signed by President Ram Nath Kovind
(In simple terms, will be regulated by the Union Ministry headed by Prakash Javadekar)
