QUAD aka "Quadrilateral Security Dialogue"..... New style of diplomacy to counter China

  Question that lot of people are looking for an answer to -   what is the QUAD or Quadrilateral Security Dialogue.

For me it is....


Before that let's know something about Indo-Pacific region. 

                                               It is basically a maritime space, stretches from the Indian Ocean to the West Pacific Ocean. An integrated region that combines the Indian Ocean, the Pacific Ocean & the land masses that surrounds them. 

The countries in this Indo-Pacific region have one thing  in common

                                              - dispute with China 

Some having trade dispute & some territorial disputes. Just because China jeopardized security in the Indo-Pacific, refused to respect internationally accepted maritime laws, challenged the rule based orders, claimed some islands & built artificial ones.  Overall a threat to peace in the Indo-Pacific.

History of Origin.....

                   Began as an ad-hoc grouping in the year 2004 after the Indian Ocean Tsunami - a deadliest natural disaster in history effecting more than 14 countries. Where India, The United States, Japan & Australia came together to form the Tsunami core group working towards Tsunami relief & reconstruction. And when it's purpose was solved the group dissolved. 


As this new kind of diplomacy seemed fruitful an informal strategic dialogue was initiated by PM Shinzo Abe of Japan in 2007. With support of PM Manmohan Singh of India, PM John Howard of Australia & VP Dick Cheney of the US. 

With aim to develop mechanism for cooperation among members in strategic intelligence and military exercise. It was also envisaged to balance increasing Chinese hegemony in the region. 


 Unpreceded event happened in 2007, a joint Military Exercise "Exercise Malabar" was started but it could not go far & Australia withdrew from it after 2007.

QUAD once again came in news when leaders of all four members countries met in sidelines of 12th East Asia summit in Manila on Nov 11, 2017. 


Soon in 2020, Australia again took part in Exercise Malabar hosted by Indian Navy in  two phases. I phase held near the coast of Visakhapatnam in the Bay of Bengal and II phase in the Arabian Sea. 



Historic meeting 12 March 2021

First official submit of QUAD, where heads of the four Government first time gave a joint statement "The spirit of Quad". Before this meeting, these countries used to engage in QUAD, but they had always released separate statements.
